Mary Etta
Gruver
Jan 28, 1939 — Apr 17, 2024
Miami
Mary Etta (Webster) Gruver, 85, peacefully transitioned from this Earth on April 17th, 2024. Mary was born on January 28th, 1939, and spent nearly her entire life in El Dorado, KS. She was the youngest of seven children born to Cordelia (King) and Gerald Webster. Mary married George Haines and had three children, Nora (Haines) McAllister, married to Max McAllister; Gloria (Haines) Canady, married to Jeff Canady; and George Haines II. Mary has three grandchildren, Dr. Kacy (Canady) Barker of Front Royal, VA; Jacob Canady of Idaho Springs, CO; and Brice Stephenson of El Dorado, KS. After amicably separating from her first marriage, Mary married Charles "Jack" Gruver in 1973 and the two enjoyed 23 years of marriage, spending their time together at their home in Prospect Township tending to their horses.
Mary was a caregiver at heart – extending her unconditional love and acceptance to everyone she encountered. She was a great cook and insistent on feeding anyone who entered her home. She was a mother and grandmother to nearly everyone she met. And though she was small in stature and sweet in demeanor – she was a spitfire when it came to her sense of humor. She found reasons to laugh and smile everyday – often breaking out in song and dance if that's what it took to put smiles on the faces around her. Despite her passive spirit, she could outshoot most men on any shooting range with her beloved pearl-handled pistol. Her love for life could be found on the skating rink floor where she stunned everyone as an amateur skater or doing a jackknife dive off the high dive in her leopard-print bathing suit. This world will be a little less sweet without Mary in it, but the sunsets will be more vibrant with her looking down.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Cordelia (King) and Gerald Webster; her sisters, Gloria (Webster) Stubbs, Phyllis (Webster) Metcalf, and Selma (Webster) Brickley; her brothers Forrest "Bubby" Webster and Enos Webster; her daughter Nora (Haines) McAllister; her sons-in-law Max McAllister and Jeff Canady; her ex-husband George Haines, and her husband Charles "Jack" Gruver. She is survived by her daughter Gloria (Haines) Canady and son George Haines II, both of El Dorado, KS; her three grandchildren; her sister Lota Mae (Webster) Miller of Burns Flat, OK; her nephew Larry Webster, of Arkansas, who was like a brother; her niece Linda (Miller) Seglem, of Oklahoma, who she had a special relationship with; and many more nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Mary will be cremated, and her ashes spread near her favorite childhood memory. When suffering from Dementia, Mary wanted nothing more than to go home to her momma. Her family finds peace knowing she has arrived. A special thanks to her daughter, Gloria, who served as her caregiver for nearly 10 years, Good Shepherd Hospice, and the staff of Lake Point nursing home in El Dorado.
