Marion George Maxwell's Obituary
Marion G. Maxwell, 88, has left us to be with The Lord after peacefully passing away Monday, November 16, 2015, at his home in Wichita, KS.
He was born on March 7, 1927 in Linn County and the son of Bessie (Daniels) Maxwell and Earl Maxwell. He was united in marriage to Phyllis I. Matney on May 31, 1947.
Marion grew up in the Twin Springs community, attended Parker High School where he loved to play football, and then enlisted in the Navy in 1945. He was a Gunner's Mate on the USS Bairoko during WWII.
His early years of employment included being a fireman, then engineer, on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Marion left the railroad to work for the City of Osawatomie as a linesman and retired from the city as Director of Public Works after 34 years of employment. He was a volunteer on the Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department for many years and also served as Fire Chief.
In their early years of marriage Marion and Phyllis lived in Coffeyville, KS, Kansas City, MO and then moved to Osawatomie in the early 1950s. After retiring in 1988 they moved to their lake home on Lake of the Ozarks in Laurie, MO where they enjoyed hosting family reunions and creating special memories for 25 years straight. In 2006 Marion and Phyllis moved to Wichita to be closer to family. During his retirement years Marion enjoyed family times, trips, fishing, hunting, woodworking and bowling.
While living in Osawatomie Marion and Phyllis were members of the First Christian Church. When they retired, they were part of the founding group of the West Lake Christian Church in Laurie, MO where they were active members for many years and enjoyed watching the church grow.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Pauline (Ralph) Harrison. Family members left to treasure his memory are his wife of 68 years, Phyllis Maxwell of Wichita, two daughters Marilyn (Dennis) Carpenter of Wichita and Rickey Lynn (Bob) Grimm of Orrville, OH, 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, brother James Maxwell (Joyce) of Osawatomie, and other cherished relatives and friends.
Celebration of Marion's life will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, November 27, 2015 at Beagle United Methodist Church followed by inurnment at the Cadmus Cemetery. Marion's immediate family will greet family and friends from 1-1:45 PM.
