Obituary

Augusta - Larry Phil Markley, 77, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.

Larry was born on October 12, 1938, to Ernest W. and Jennie (McKinney) Markley in Lincoln County, Kansas. Larry married Donna Zortman on June 6, 1960 in Fowler, Kansas. Larry Markley was a teacher and coach for 36 years. He attended Lincoln Kansas Schools. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Bethany College in 1960 and his Master's degree from Fort Hays State University in 1967. He began his coaching career at Marquette High School, where his football team in 1960 was undefeated and un-scored upon. He received the league certificate of honor and was inducted with his team into the Kansas Sports Museum/Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. In 1961, his Marquette team was undefeated and scored on only once. Larry then coached football at Haven High School, where his 1971, 1975, and 1976 teams went to the state playoffs. In 1976, he was selected as the Kansas Class 3A Football Coach of the Year and Coach of the Year by the Augusta Daily Gazette for the League Dream Team. Larry also coached at Winfield High School, leading the football team to the playoffs in 1981 and the girls' basketball team to the playoffs for four consecutive years. In 1992, Larry was selected as the Area IV Athletic Director of the Year by the Kansas High School Athletic Directors Association. During his coaching career, 216 of his players received All-League, All-State, and All-American honors in football and basketball. He has published several football articles. He also taught Physical Education and History. Larry then enjoyed his retirement years filling his time with family, friends and many hobbies. He loved fishing, hunting, golfing and bowling.

Larry is survived by his wife Donna of the home; daughters Shana Markley and husband Alan Schneider of Augusta, KS, Erika Richardson and husband Ben of Augusta, KS; son Mark Markley and wife Cristina of Ball Ground, GA; sister Beth Bennett and husband Walt of Alva, OK; brother Dick Markley and wife Lois of Cleveland, MO; grandchildren Shea and Shane Smith, Samantha, Andrew and Christopher Markley, Olivia, Emma and Elise Richardson; step-grandchildren Spencer and Chandler Schneider.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Howard, Kenneth, Wilton, Ernest Jr. and Max; sister June Hanneman.

Visitation with family will be Sunday, February 7 from 3:00-5:00 pm at Dunsford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, February 8 at 10:30 am at First United Methodist Church of Augusta in Augusta, KS. Interment will be on Tuesday, February 9 at 11:00 am at Fowler Cemetery, Fowler, Kansas.

The family wishes Memorial Contributions be made to Bethany College Athletic Fund in Lindsborg, KS or Alzheimer's Association - Central and Western KS Chapter, in care of the Dunsford Funeral Home.
