Joyce was born on Monday, September 5, 1955 in Dodge City, Kansas to Melvin Henry and Gladys (Stitt) Bredfeldt. Joyce was proud of her dad, who started and ran Bredfeldt Oil, Inc., and her mom who taught orchestra in the Dodge City schools and offered many private lessons in their home. Joyce, and her sister Shirley, were taught a love of learning and hard work very early. Their home was filled with a love of music, and Joyce learned to play the cello and piano from her mom. Her grandmother Edna Ball Stitt taught Joyce to sew on a Singer treadle machine. She learned a love of gardening from her dad, who grew a large vegetable garden as well as rose bushes. She joined the local girl scouts and continued to grow her skill sets with camping, hiking, trekking, backpacking, nature appreciation, teamwork, task completion, budgeting, finance management, camping, cooking, problem solving skills, teaching others, singing, and playing the guitar – attaining a rank of 1st class. Joyce graduated from Dodge City High School in 1973 and entered the world as a resourceful woman who loved adventure.
In 1981, Joyce had her only daughter, Jayme, whom she loved dearly.
Joyce graduated with a teaching degree from St. Mary of the Plains College in 1986. She was a high school teacher for many years in several Kansas school districts. She taught accounting, business law, shorthand, and typing. When some of those skills grew obsolete with technology advances, she again grew her skill set-- switching to teaching computer programing and keyboarding. Jayme even had her mom as a computer teacher in high school.
Joyce was united in marriage to Emerson Stewart on July 20th, 1996 in Garden City, Kansas. They were married for 26 years until Joyce's passing. Together they enjoyed traveling and doing short mission trips. They served in Zimbabwe, Africa at the Nhowe Mission, as well as in Mexico and South Texas.
In the last 20 years, Joyce grew her skill sets again to include a deep love for a variety of art forms including stamping, scrapbooking, photography, watercolors, painting, drawing, woodworking, zendoodling, Bible journaling, and mixed-media art. She loved creating something new in her art studio. She also loved to share her art with others and taught many projects to others. She also expanded her sewing skills, creating many quilts. She was on a mission to provide quilts for each grandchild's graduation.
Joyce loved her grandkids and spent many hours supporting their many activities and hobbies.
She loved serving in her community and spent many joy-filled hours serving as a MOPS mentor in Augusta.
Joyce was a life-long Christian and spent her many years living out a deep faith to carry her through all the highs and lows of her beautiful life.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Emerson of Augusta; daughter, Jayme and husband Neal Whitlow of Augusta; sister, Shirley and husband Michael Astwood of Kingwood, Texas; and 10 beloved grandchildren, Josh and Caleb Stewart; Aaron and Daniel Stewart; Emily, Kate, and Collin Stewart; Addy, Ellison, and Grayson Whitlow.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents.
The family wishes that Memorial Contributions be made out to Nhowe Mission, left in care of Eastpoint Church of Christ, or Good Shepherd Hospice, left in care of the Dunsford Funeral Home.
