John Henry
Moore Jr.
Jun 12, 1928 — Jun 3, 2020
Augusta
Augusta – John Henry Moore Jr., 91, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.
John was born on Tuesday, June 12, 1928 in Montague County near Sunset, Texas. His mother, Rutha Carolina Coffman, named him after his father, who had died before he was born. John graduated from Ysleta High School in El Paso and turned down a football scholarship to Abilene Christian College because at that time, married men were not accepted onto the team, and he was afraid someone else would get pretty Wanda if he didn't grab her up. They have been married now for 72 and a half years.
John started his career at El Paso Natural Gas Company as a laborer in the yard, but ended it as area supervisor over multiple pumping stations. John was always a strong member of the Church of Christ. As a young man, the company sent him to Benson, Arizona where there was no congregation of the church. John and Wanda worked to establish a group there, and after some years, were leaders in building a meeting place that is still being used today. Sometimes the song leader and the teacher and the preacher was John Moore, so when his boys were big enough, they got pressed into service.
John was very much a family man. He loved his family and babies and children and food and singing and gardens and fruit trees and onions and hot peppers. He loved a nice car and he loved to drive.
He is survived by his wife Wanda; sons John Michael (Maxine), Donald Lee (Sheryl) and James Patrick (Theresa); grandchildren Mica Hunter, Seth Moore, Mary Brookman, Lindsay Nichols, Mindy Walker, John Moore, Taylor Moore and Margo Engelmann; and his 13 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his daughter Shirley, his parents and his sisters.
Funeral Service will be on Monday, June 8 th at 11:00 a.m. at Church of Christ in Augusta. The service will be livestreamed on the Augusta KS Church of Christ Facebook page. There will be a slideshow just before 11 as well.
