Canedy
Aug 2, 1933 — Aug 19, 2026
Augusta
John Alvin Canedy, 93, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
On Wednesday, August 2, 1933, in Wichita, Kansas, John Alvin Canedy came into this world as the only son of John Elmo and Helen Loretta (Greep) Canedy.
Growing up in Wichita, Kansas, John attended and graduated from Wichita North High School. After graduating, John initially worked at a local service station where his interest in automotive work and metal machining was stimulated. In 1953, John went to work at Cessna Aircraft Company as a sheet metal assembler and then transitioned into a position operating tool and die machines making precision aircraft parts. During this period of his life, he built a house next door to where his parents had their home in the northern area of Wichita, Kansas.
On June 2nd, 1963, John was united in marriage to Charlene Louise Evans in Wichita, KS. John and Charlene were introduced to each other by one of his sisters, Jean Canedy, who worked with Charlene. On November 20th, 1966, their oldest son, David, was born and on June 25, 1968, youngest son Craig was born. Around 1970, John and Charlene desired a quieter life out of the big city, so they invested in some land east of Augusta, Kansas. There, John built the basement foundation and the house in Wichita was moved and placed on the basement foundation. He then over the next five to ten years added onto the exiting house doing all the construction framing and finishing himself.
After working forty-five years, in 1998 at the age of 66, John entered his retirement phase of life. At his retirement dinner, dad was seated with Russ Meyer. They discussed what their retirement plans were, and a common thing was raising grandchildren.
During his lifetime, John enjoyed building his own home automotive repair, lawn and gardening, woodworking, electronics, baby-sitting grandchildren, reading science fiction and technology books and magazines, watching sports and TV, especially the show “Blue Bloods”.
John is survived by his sons, David Canedy (Patricia) and Craig Canedy; grandchildren, Matthew Canedy and Kayla Canedy; sister, Jean Canedy Mayer (John).
John is preceded in death by his parents; Wife, Charlene; sisters, Irene Canedy Lacy (Willaim), Joan Canedy Oxendine (Ralph), and Mary Ann Kelly.
