Helen Lucille Miller Applegate's Obituary
Helen Lucille Hodson was born on October 29, 1914, and passed on to her eternal father on July 5, 2011, while residing at the Hidden Lakes Care Center in Raytown, Missouri. She was the daughter of Roy L. and Elizabeth Shafer Hodson of Dallas County, Iowa.
Helen's early life was spent on the family farm. She attended school and graduated from Redfield High School in 1931. She worshiped at the Shiloh Christian Church with her parents and four brothers and two sisters all who predeceased Helen.
On December 14, 1931, Helen married Clarence Miller in Adel, Iowa. They moved to northern Missouri and together lived on several farms while raising their children: Eleanor "Pat" Terry of Independence, Missouri, Roberta and Frank Cordova of El Paso Texas, Linda Rossi of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Charles "Jim" and Kathleen Miller of Pawcatuck, Connecticut. In 1957 Clarence and
Helen moved to Augusta, Kansas where they made their home. Clarence passed away in 1985. Helen later married John Applegate who also preceded her in death in 1997.
To be closer to her family, Helen moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 2000 where she resided until her death.
Religion was very important to Helen. She was a member of Allendale (Missouri) Baptist Church; She transferred her membership to the First Southern Baptist Church of Augusta, Kansas and upon moving to Independence, Missouri she transferred her membership to Nolan Road Baptist Church.
Besides her four children she is survived by 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren who will dearly miss her.
Visitation will be held at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, followed by Christian services in the chapel at 3:00 p.m.. Helen will be interred next to Clarence at the Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta on Monday, July 11, at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, Suite 100, 9221 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Missouri 64114 or in care of the funeral home.
