West Branch, IA – Doris Kathleen (Winzer) Green, 99, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020.
Doris was born on July 24, 1920, at home in rural Augusta, Butler County, Kansas, to Bertram Claude and Ethel (Brown) Winzer. She was a graduate of Augusta High School in 1937. Doris then graduated from the University of Kansas in 1941 with a B.A. in Political Science. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Doris married John Wyeth Green on February 22, 1946 at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Wichita, Kansas.
Doris previously worked in Washington, DC, for the U. S. Foreign Service and was employed as a secretary at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas, prior to her marriage. After her marriage, she worked for Dr. Wolfe in the Counseling Bureau at Kansas State University while John finished his degrees. After graduation, John and Doris lived in many places across the country as he pursued his career in oil exploration. After settling permanently in Houston, Texas, in 1957, Doris was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest daughter entered school. Doris then worked at Fair Haven United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas as the financial secretary and retired in 1986.
Doris and John were active members of Fair Haven from 1957 until their deaths. Doris was a supporter of many conservation groups. She had an interest in history, geography, music, and nature and was a life-long learner and a passionate reader. Doris was an extremely good cook and left her daughters with all of these interests.
Doris is survived by her daughters Kathleen Ann Green of St. Paul, MN, and Patricia Elaine Green of Tiffin, IA.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband John and her daughter Linda.
Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta, Kansas.
Memorial service will be held in April 2020 in Houston, Texas at Fair Haven UMC.
Memorial service will be held on Monday, August 23, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Dunsford Funeral Chapel in Augusta. Family has requested that masks be worn at the service please.
The family wishes memorial contributions to be made out to Fair Haven Food Pantry, the Flint Hills Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, or the American Heart Association. They may be left in care of the Dunsford Funeral Home, PO Box 26, Augusta, KS 67010.
