Obituary

Charles Daniel Black, 91, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Friday, April 9, 2010 at Chaucer Estates in Wichita.

Charles was born July 8, 1918 to Charles and Luticia (Hanlon) Black in Pike, West Virginia. He married Orvetta Short in Hamilton, Kansas on December 24, 1939 and they spent 70 plus years together.

Charles was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific theater where he earned a Purple Heart. He was a Past Master in the Masons. He worked in the oil field for Sohio Petroleum Company for over 35 years. During that time he and Orvetta lived in Leon, Holyrood, Chase and Plainville, all in Kansas as well as Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and Perryton, Texas before settling in Wichita. They spent the past 30 years, after Charles retired, traveling, playing golf, and enjoying family.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Howard Black, a baby sister Rosella Fern Black and sister Delva Utter.

Charles leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife Orvetta of Wichita; two sons, Larry Black of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Daryl Lee Black of Perryton, Texas; sister-in-law, Twila Black, Benton, Kansas; Niece Connie (Leonard) Stowell, Benton, Kansas; and Nephews, Ronnie (Janet) Black, Wichita, Kansas, Galen Black, Charleston, Oregon; Ron (Nancy) Utter, Augusta, Montana, and Wayne (Bonnie) Utter, Newport News, Virginia.

The family will have a private memorial service at Hamilton Township Cemetery in Hamilton, Kansas at a later date.
